Waiting on Wednesday: Invisibility by Andrea Cremer

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by us, that highlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication 'can't-wait-to-read' selection is:

Title: Invisibility
Author: Andrea Cremer, David Levithan
Publisher: Philomel/Penguin
Release Date: 7th May 2013
Find on: Goodreads, Amazon

Stephen has been invisible for practically his whole life — because of a curse his grandfather, a powerful cursecaster, bestowed on Stephen’s mother before Stephen was born. So when Elizabeth moves to Stephen’s NYC apartment building from Minnesota, no one is more surprised than he is that she can see him. A budding romance ensues, and when Stephen confides in Elizabeth about his predicament, the two of them decide to dive headfirst into the secret world of cursecasters and spellseekers to figure out a way to break the curse. But things don’t go as planned, especially when Stephen’s grandfather arrives in town, taking his anger out on everyone he sees. In the end, Elizabeth and Stephen must decide how big of a sacrifice they’re willing to make for Stephen to become visible — because the answer could mean the difference between life and death. At least for Elizabeth.

The prospect of both acclaimed authors certainly makes me curious of what the result would be. Already the cover has sparked the interest in me. The typography is especially good, without affecting the cover, just making it better. And the book's coming out two days before my birthday!

But after a tragic accident claims the life of her mother, Araina is left dumbfounded and finds herself on a much different path: enrolling in the local college in Austin. Convinced that her mother’s death was no accident, she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth, and becomes disconnected from everything around her in the process.

That is … until she meets Lucca.

Lucca is the captain of the Resistance: an elite group sworn to protect Araina. He knows the truth about her mother’s death and the future attempts that will be made on Araina’s life due to her being the great-granddaughter of Leto, mother of Artemis and Apollo, which is why it is important he follow the one rule given to him: Don’t get too attached.

It is his job to gain her trust and somehow reveal her true lineage and what the fates have in store for her. Araina is about to be thrown into a world she never knew and will have to come to terms with the role she will play in the Resistance.

Will she stand up and fight or will she lose the one thing everyone has been trying to protect?

Her Life.

Excerpt:
He walked the path back to the house they were using as their headquarters at the moment; though it wasn’t much on the outside the inside made up plenty for it. As he walked in through the door he stopped and looked to the right to stare at his own reflection. Heavy bags hung under his eyes, his tan skin was much duller and his black hair a mess.

“You need to get rest. Huntir and I have everything set up so take this opportunity to gather your strength. Wearing yourself out like this will not be beneficial in guarding her.”

Lucca turned to his older brother Matteo, surprised that he had arrived so soon. “I know, I will go take a shower and get rest, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done.” He passed Matteo but not before laying his hand on his brother's shoulder as if silently reassuring him not to worry and that he was fine. Though his brother had pointed out his need for rest, his mind was running around with too many unanswered questions with no way to solve them. But one question he kept going back to was always the same, the one that would matter most in the end.

When he finally reveals the truth to her will she rise from her sorrow and be the savior they needed her to be? Or will she turn away and go into hiding like her mother did and suffer the same fate? As he got to the top of the stairs, without turning around he asked, “Why did you arrive ahead of schedule brother?” he waited for his brother to reply, a heavy silence floated between the two. He did not expect the next few words that came out of his brother’s mouth.

“We have verification on who killed Aella.”

Review: Prophecy Girl by Faith McKay

Title: Prophecy Girl ( Lacuna Valley #1)
Author: Faith McKay
Publisher: ~
Release Date: Nov 20th 2012
Find On: AmazonGoodreads

Quick Review: Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.

Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

Detailed Review: I loved this book. It was really nice to say that it was interesting, captivating, unusual and heroic! Faith McKay has a style to her writing that will make the readers read once more; twice and all over again. I thought the story was quite good as it told the story of a girl called Sam Winthrop. The start of the story was quite hilarious. It starts off as Sam's out of the house at her backyard (which is not really much though...) but suddenly her sister, Violet comes out and tries to make Sam play Littlest Pet Shop...

See what happens then.

“Do you want to play Littlest Pet Shop? You can have the turtle.” Violet tilted her

head to the side with a small hopeful smile.
Sam cringed and sunk down further in her chair. “Not today, kid.”
“You suck. You're no fun at all anymore.” Violet kicked the pile of dead grass. “I bet you'd
come inside and play if it rained,” she pouted.

I thought Violet was adorable. Yes, adorable. I mean, the kid's practically stuck on Littlest Pet Shop while her sister is dying in a desert-like world out in their backyard, wishing for rain. Then the impossible happens...

“If it started raining I'd probably dance in it.”

Apparently Sam's pretty desperate to run in the rain. Guess what happens next...

Guess!

“Yeah?” Violet smiled and got down on her knees, clasped her hands together, and began to
pray for it to rain.

And then...

She opened her jaw wide to pop her ears.

“See!” Violet squealed.
Sam opened her eyes and blinked in disbelief at the dark shade on the hills in front of her. She
looked up to see gray clouds rolling through the sky. Violet giggled and jumped up and down next
to her.
“After you dance, can we play Littlest Pet Shop, please?!” Violet begged.
“Sure, kid...”

So as you know when Violet prays, her wishes comes true like wishing rain which Sam  later on got her wish from her younger sister, Violet.

SAM; The main protagonist of the story - she was really cool yet 'skippy' and strong even through the toughest times from her mother. She has shown the most result from this girl of ignorance to a girl who has truly found her way in the world.

VIOLET; officially granted, sweet. Violet 'Vi' as Nick considers her - I thought Violet was a very adorable and sweet girl who definitely is such an unbelievable yet hyper girl. McKay has turned this little innocent girl into a girl who has yet to see it all.

NICK; hehe...I thought Nick was a really interesting character...destined to get married to a girl called Sam? Now there's a dream come true for some people. McKay the author, has made this character inexplicably admirable and mysterious from the start and revealing his status and so-called love for Sam.

In the end, let's just say you have to read it to believe it. It's all true, scout's honour! Actually I've never been a scout before...but...oh well. I have to say Faith McKay's writing has this fluid, non-existant annoyance that some books have. Her writing was quality and equally promising.

Though some parts may confuse the reader's, never fear - you may get your wish by praying with Violet all the way through the story!

Brief Review: Equally exciting, captivating and mysterious - I can't wait to read the second book of the Lacuna Valley series! McKay's writing is definitely promising and I can't wait to read more of it when her second book comes out! Keep praying with Violet's wishes.

My Rating: 4/5  "Really Liked It"

Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: 3rd May 2011
Find on: Amazon, Goodreads

Quick Review: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is--she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are--and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series--dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.

Detailed Review: This book could be described in one word. Awesome. This book was just so AMAZING. Even words cannot say what I really think about Divergent.

It starts with Beatrice Prior going to school. Her mother is cutting her hair for her and she isn't allowed to look at her reflection because it was self-indulgent. She is about to sit for an aptitude test which may help her decide what faction she's going to choose: to leave or stay with her family. She is from Abnegation and she finds it hard to be selfless, no matter how much she tries, unlike her brother Caleb, who makes such a good job out of it.

Guess what the aptitude results are.

They are Divergent, or inconclusive, as the administrator said. The test only ruled out two factions: Candor and Amity.

Beatrice didn't really know then how much this secret could change her whole life and whole world. Now on Choosing Day she has to choose one out of three factions: Erudite, Abnegation and Dauntless.

She would never choose Erudite, because of their insults at her faction about the government and their leaders. Now Dauntless, she has always wanted to be one of them. She watches them jump off the train for school every morning. If she choose Abnegation, that meant she was still loyal to her family. But did she one to be one of them?

Finally, Choosing Day and arrives and she has to make her choice. From that day onward, she starts to find out that her family has more secrets than she has ever imagined. Her brother is to go first since the register was done backwards. And he chose...

Erudite.

That's a shock right? I mean, he has always been the selfless one among both of them and to think that all of it has been a pretense is just...

Beatrice herself chose Dauntless. She and her brother have just betrayed their family and faction. She is selfish. She is brave.

Time for initiation. The real test. And to be honest, Dauntless have the worst initiations ever. Only the top ten are allowed to stay. The rest are left factionless. With only this one fact in her head, she tries her best and finally ends up first. Though not without consequences. Her Divergence has started to shown in the simulations. She can manipulate them.

On visiting day, her mother came to visit her. And another secret just pops out. Her mother was Dauntless.

OK, the romance. I haven't explained that yet.

She falls in love with the instructor. Yup, that's it.

But the ending was the best part. It ends with Abnegation being slaughtered by simulation-controlled Dauntless. Only the Divergent are immune to the serum. That's when she finds out that Tobias is like her too. Surprise. There's a another secret he's been hiding since he joined Dauntless though.

He used to be in Abnegation and his father was Marcus Eaton, one of the government leaders of the city. The reason why he left was because his father kept torturing him. He wanted escape.

Overall, I LOVED IT. I really wish I own the book! I had to borrow it from one of my friends. *sigh*

Can't wait to read Insurgent!

Brief Review: The author has the power to put you in the main character's shoes, which is good and the way the factions are depicted give new meaning to Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games. Amazingly written. A book that can't be ignored. Buy it when you see it.

Final Rating: 5/5 'Totally Amazing and Awesome'

Waiting on Wednesday: Being Henry David by Cal Armistead

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by us, that highlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication 'can't-wait-to-read' selection is:

 Title: Being Henry David
Author: Cal Armistead
Publisher: Albert Whitman Teen
Release Date: 1st March 2013
Find on: Amazon, Goodreads

Seventeen-year-old "Hank" has found himself at Penn Station in New York City with no memory of anything --who he is, where he came from, why he's running away. His only possession is a worn copy of Walden, by Henry David Thoreau. And so he becomes Henry David-or "Hank" and takes first to the streets, and then to the only destination he can think of--Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. Cal Armistead's remarkable debut novel is about a teen in search of himself. Hank begins to piece together recollections from his past. The only way Hank can discover his present is to face up to the realities of his grievous memories. He must come to terms with the tragedy of his past, to stop running, and to find his way home.

The story was actually interesting, which was unusual since the what counted as interesting to me usually appeared in fantasy or paranormal books, not contemporary. The idea was especially fresh, which I thought was good for a debut author. (My request at NetGalley just got approved. So the review would be coming up before it's published!)

Review: Ascend by Amanda Hocking

Title: Ascend
Author: Amanda Hocking
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release Date: 24th April 2012
Find on: Amazon, Goodreads

Quick Review: Amanda Hocking is an indie publishing sensation whose self-published novels have sold millions of copies all over the world.  Ascend is the final chapter in her bestselling Trylle trilogy—and you’ll never guess how it ends!

Wendy Everly is facing an impossible choice. The only way to save the Trylle from their deadliest enemy is by sacrificing herself.  If she doesn’t surrender to the Vittra, her people will be thrust into a brutal war against an unbeatable foe.  But how can Wendy leave all her friends behind…even if it’s the only way to save them?

The stakes have never been higher, because her kingdom isn’t the only thing she stands to lose. After falling for both Finn and Loki, she’s about to make the ultimate choice…who to love forever. One guy has finally proven to be the love of her life—and now all their lives might be coming to an end.

Everything has been leading to this moment.  The future of her entire world rests in her hands—if she’s ready to fight for it.

Detailed Review:  This was overall very good. I liked how it ended but I'm certainly not going to clue you in! You'll have to find out for yourself by reading it. But I mean, this is what I expected. But some aspects of the books were surprising as well. The pace picked up really well from Torn and I liked how the main character Wendy has strengthened and toughened up since Switched. She has completely changed.

OK, only one spoiler. Finn marries another woman named Mia, who is a widow and already has a child called Hana  in the end. And that means something else too. I'm sure you can figure out what that 'something' is.

I know this review is very short. But seriously, I really mean it.

GO BUY AND READ THE BOOK.

Brief Review: This book made a good finale to the series. I liked the ending. It's fantastic! Most of the action happens in this book!

Final Rating: 5/5 'Totally Amazing'

Title: Unravel Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: 5th February 2013

Description: tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

Seriously, covers are what gets me wanting to read that particular book, and this isn't an exception. And I like it when a revolution or rebellion happens in a book, it's absolutely thrilling, such as the Delirium series by Lauren Oliver! I just like the touch of originality in these types of books!

Review: Torn by Amanda Hocking

Title: Torn
Author: Amanda Hocking
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Release Date:28th February 2012
Find on: Amazon, Goodreads

Quick Review: When Wendy Everly first discovers the truth about herself—that she’s a changeling switched at birth—she knows her life will never be the same. Now she’s about to learn that there’s more to the story…

She shares a closer connection to her Vittra rivals than she ever imagined—and they’ll stop at nothing to lure her to their side. With the threat of war looming, her only hope of saving the Trylle is to master her magical powers—and marry an equally powerful royal. But that means walking away from Finn, her handsome bodyguard who’s strictly off limits…and Loki, a Vittra prince with whom she shares a growing attraction.

Torn between her heart and her people, between love and duty, Wendy must decide her fate. If she makes the wrong choice, she could lose everything, and everybody, she’s ever wanted…in both worlds.

Detailed Review: I loved this book way better than the first book! The pace simply picked up from there and it was just amazing! I didn't think Amanda Hocking could surprise me anymore since the first book but Torn really had plenty of surprises too.

It starts with Wendy and Rhys being in Wendy's old house, where she used to live with her host brother, Matt and aunt Maggie. Matt doesn't believe the story his sister's telling him, which is that she and Rhys were switched at birth and he was actually Rhys' real brother.

Then, when Wendy and Rhys were alone in her room, Finn Holmes snuck inside and said that he was going to bring her back to Forening. He is no longer her bodyguard and is soon replaced by another one, Duncan, who is smarter than he looked. But she declines to go home.

But the Vittra caught her, Matt and Ryhs and took them to their place. She meets Loki, a Markis who's keeping secrets and seductive at the same time. There she finds out something else, the King of the Vittra, Oren, is actually her FATHER. But they manages to escape with the help of Finn, Tove and Duncan. And Loki.

You must be asking why Loki helped Wendy in the first place, when he was a Vittra. You'll have to read for yourself. I won't reveal anything.

Soon, the training for her powers start and her instructor turns out to be Tove. Day by day, she starts to improve, doing things she couldn't imagine even capable of. Such as moving things with her mind, like Tove.

Then... Loki appears.

Problems start to emerge after that. Her affection for both Finn and Loki start to tear apart, leaving her confused. And to make it even worse, she finds the Trylles' weakness when they harness their power. They begin to age unnaturally and become weaker if they continuously, like Wendy's mother, the Queen. Elora is slowly weakening, at only 39 and she looked like an old woman, sick and frail (no offense meant).

But it happened, the ultimate choice: she has to marry Tove, something she doesn't even want to do. She's ok with them being friends but not husband and wife. In the end though, she still did it for the sake of her country and mother, even though it meant breaking her own heart.

Brief Review: This book was really good. The overall story was actually well-crafted and I managed to see how the author's writing start to develop. This is a must-read!

Final Rating: 5/5 'Totally Amazing'

Quick Review: Tenley Alexander is just a simple small-town girl living within the closed realms of her small world. A fresh high school graduate, Tenley tries to keep herself on her toes in the sweet anticipation of leaving her tiny town for good in order to go thrive at her dream collegiate school. However, Tenley’s motivation is severely disrupted when a love from her past sweeps unexpectedly back into her life. With the threat of tripping and falling back into a kind of love that she doesn’t want, Tenley’s goals become hazy and her little world suddenly expands to be so much bigger.

Jacob Trojan’s life is finally returning back to normal. Eight years have passed since his father’s tragic death and three more have gone by since his brother disappeared off the map. Standing on his feet for the first time in his life, Jacob is determined to do something with his life. With a possible collegiate athletic scholarship on the line and his mother and perfect girlfriend standing proudly behind him, Jacob knows he can’t steer wrong. However, that all changes when he lays eyes on Tenley Alexander for the first time in two years…

Leighton Gardner’s life is pretty much perfect. She’s beautiful and she has also somehow held onto the hand of a beautiful boy for nearly two years. Growing up in a wealthy family as an only child, Leighton is used to getting handed anything that she’s ever wanted. That’s why she’s caught off guard when Jacob suddenly begins to pull his fingers out of her slippery grasp. With the encouragement of her best friend, Leighton unwillingly begins to investigate the many pieces of her life…and finds out that everything she has ever known may not be as perfect as it has always seemed…

Based on true events, "Let Him Go" is a story that displays both the good and the bad of small towns, close friendships, and time. Written from three different perspectives, the first book in the "Let Him Go" series will captivate the reader from the very first page until the very last letter.

Detailed Review: I think this book was quite admirable and simple yet understandable to the very last word for word. The author's writing is very unique and fresh. I thought the characters were easy-going, fun and delightful from the start till the end of the book.

It's story based on true events which make this book one of a kind. You'll probably think that, 'Oh it's boring, I don't think I should read it cause it's based on true events...' Well you're wrong. Give it a try and see how this author easily twists the world of reality into a book!

It starts off slow and easy. A girl called Tenley Alexander is standing at the side watching a baseball match and her long ago close friend, Jacob Trojan is seen. I thought this scene was quite 'moving'. Flashbacks and dates that tell us their location of a friendly afternoon friendship in his car. This book follows up on three protagonist where each tell a story of their own even though it's connected throughout the plot.

'“Strike three! Batter’s out!”
The perfectness of the memory was shattered instantly by the sound of the umpire’s voice calling me out. Stunned, all I could do was blink rapidly as reality set in. When the memory finally fogged up and cleared, I didn’t even bother to look in the direction of my coach. I had let him down; I had broken my promise. As I sauntered lowly back to the dugout, I couldn’t help but think that that was only the second promise I had ever broken in my life. The first promise had been the one I made to Tenley two solid years ago.'

This scene shows Jacob's point of view where he wakes up in reality to find that he broke a promise to Tenley and now a new one -he made to his coach. How simple can promises break? So easily like shattered glass! I loved Felt's (the author) writing as it was clear and easy to read through.

TENLEY - girl of Jacob's dream? She's a girl who seems to break easily but not too easy. She's sweet, admirable and a crazy fan of Taylor Swift songs. Especially 'Fearless'. She's got her own mind-set and still loves Jacob Trojan hard to the core. Even though some say, "Let Him Go."

JACOB - to me, he totally sounds like some guy who dumps girls easily. Nope, you're wrong - let's just say he breaks promises easily. Ok, a little too easily. But to Tenley, he's someone she loves or can she? But he has a pretty sad story, you'll have to read it to find out...

LEIGHTON - Typical beauty queen. Can't stand them, can you? I thought this girl was fine. Yeah, just fine, nothing else. She isn't my fav character in the story but ah well, you need someone who does the dirty work. She's a total drama queen (that's what her friends say...) and yet she wants Jacob so badly. Should they be together and get their happy ending? OR Should she fight for it?

The war is on!

I loved Tenley. She was my fav character throughout the entire book - the author wrote this character to a very define way, making the character delicate yet hard-core. Including her obsession over Taylor Swift and her lucky song, "Fearless". The story of her life, Tenley has overcome the song and became fearless in the end. The progression of her character has become the most responsible in the book.

But I can't tell you everything that will ruin the story for you! The ending is typically bitter sweet, yet tragic-ish for one particular character in the book. Here's a simple message and clue - 'Leighton, honey, you need to let him go.'

Read this book and you'll see why it's good based on true events, friendship, jealousy and tons of typical drama queens - I think you'll find this quite enjoyable!

*Don't forget to check out her first novel, Fighting Fate where you can find at Amazon

Brief Review: 'Based on true events, Let Him Go is a wonderful and fun day-off from fantasy and the world of fiction where it depicts the truth and reality into a seemingly out-of-touch 20th century book! Felt's writing has a touch of inspiration that captures this book's meaning - "Go for it!"'

My Rating: 4/5  "Really Liked It!"
